Once upon a time there was Siberian permafrost

According to an article published today in the New Scientist and cited by the Guardian’s science correspondent, Ian Sample (Warming hits “tipping point” ): “ A vast expanse of western Sibera is undergoing an unprecedented thaw that could dramatically increase the rate of global warming, climate scientists warn today“.

An area of permafrost the size of France and Germany combined has started to melt. The by-product of the melting as this area thaws will be the release of billions of tonnes of methane, a greenhouse gas 20 times more potent than carbon dioxide.
